Nothing says spring fashion like a new handbag. After months and months of carrying around your basic black bag or all-too-serious tannish tote, we're approaching the time to switch to something a little more, well, perky.

"Spring is a celebration of color," said Deborah Tangelder, owner of Get Heeled, a women's shoe boutique, and the Perfect Gift on Goodrich Road, Clarence Center.

"We're seeing a lot of bright, cheery colors -- fuchsia, soft purple, kelly green. Navy blue has made a comeback, but it's the brighter hues of blue," she said.

Popular styles range from wristlets to hobos to top-handle bags and totes. The cross-body bag -- which features a strap that allows you to wear the bag across your torso or on one shoulder -- frees up your hands and adds a measure of security.

"We're also seeing a lot of new materials for spring -- nylon material as well as the metallic linens that we saw for apparel last season. Those are pulling into accessories now," said Tangelder.

The latest lineup of spring bags has arrived in stores with an assortment of these and other warm-weather styles -- in a wide range of price ranges.

Here we highlight some of the trends popping up everywhere -- from discount stores to local boutiques. Secondhand stores and thrift shops are other options for finding bags that reflect your style (as is your mother's or grandmother's attic, for that matter).

There also are plenty of bags crafted from textile designers and artists available locally, so the options are many.

Here are some current trends. Happy handling.

* Cool straps and handles: Chain straps are a big trend this season, and not just on small bags. You'll also find chunkier ones on larger bags, sometimes mixed with other materials such as patent.

Look, too, for faux bamboo or braided handles as well as handbags with both a handle and a strap -- often cross-body style -- for gals on the go.

* Faux skins: Mock croc and other blatantly faux reptile skins are heavily textured and many come in bright colors such as turquoise.

Others are more natural-looking, if that better suits you, such as a bag with a lizard- or python-embossed finish in realistic colors.

And if you like texture in a bag but not the reptilian look, quilted surfaces are another option.

* Black and white: A classic combo for spring. Some bags are sleek and tailored; others are more whimsical with polka-dots.

You will see black and white animal prints on some handbags, too, including cow prints.

How to wear a bag like that?

"You can go bold or neutral," said Sarah Nichter, co-owner of P.S. Accessories, 1442 Hertel Ave.

"Wear an animal-print bag with a bold-colored mini dress you have hanging in your closet, in pink or cobalt blue. You can really make a statement with that when you walk into a room," she said.
