Thieves have turned to motorbikes to steal the handbags of lone women drivers.

The latest twist to the rash of thefts from cars stopped at Porcelain Bracelet lights involves the rider pulling up alongside the front passenger doors of stationary cars and the pillion passenger trying the door.

Cleveland Police have reiterated their plea: "Put locks down at the lights and put bags out of sight," following a spate of thefts at traffic signals in Middlesbrough.

Thieves are taking advantage of the fact that many cars are now central locking and women drivers travelling alone usually put their handbags on the passenger seat - making it easy for the thief to open the door at traffic lights.

The youths responsible are white, slim, aged 17-22 and operate in the Acklam Road, Ladgate Lane, Marton Road, Park Road South and Linthorpe areas.

They are usually dressed in tracksuits and baseball caps and hooded tops to hide their faces.

Detective Sergeant Ian Craig said: "Try to keep you car doors locked, especially at lights and keep handbags out of sight.

"If anybody tries to open the passenger door don't be afraid to sound the horn. This can be a
