Rugby's lost crowds; LETTERS

SIR - Regarding Simon Thomas' article on poor crowds at the regional rugby games Replica Chopard ("Where have all the crowds gone, asks worried Davies", Dec 17), there are two main factors as to why the figures are lower than expected - and it has nothing to do with ticket pricing or the standard of rugby being played.

One reason is that these lovely new stadia are away from the town centres and the wonderful thing about the old grounds was that they were close to transport links and fans could have a pint and a meal either before or after kick-off and walk to and from the ground.

It was even possible to promise to take the wife shopping, then you could sneak off to watch the game while she stared at shoes!

The second reason is kick-off times now pander Chanel Fake to the demands of television and not the fans,
embroidered patches most people still prefer a good old 3pm Saturday afternoon kick-off and not a Friday night at 7pm or Saturdays and Sundays at 5.30pm. These late kick-offs are unpopular with fans who do not live in the cities, due to the problems of poor or limited public transport. It then means you have to take the car, which puts an end to the old social drink before or afterwards. IAN DAVIES Merthyr Tydfil
