SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- It didn't go six overtimes, but it was perhaps an even more heartbreaking loss for the UConn men's basketball team than last year's Big East tournament classic with Syracuse.

The Huskies, desperate for a signature win to turn their sputtering season around, nearly got one Wednesday night at the Carrier Dome against the second-ranked Orange. UConn showed fierce grit and heart in battling back from a 16-point deficit early in the second half and eventually tied it with 2 1/2 minutes to go.

But, as has been the case too often against top-notch foes, the Huskies fell just short. Jerome Dyson missed a long 3-pointer, the Huskies committed a few bad fouls, Syracuse hit seven of eight free throws over the final 33.5 seconds and held on for a 72-67 victory.

The Orange improved to 24-1 overall, 11-1 in the Big East. UConn, serenaded to the chants of "N.I.T! N.I.T.!" by the crowd of 24,847 as it walked off the court, fell to 14-10, 4-7.

"It's getting tough," said Dyson. "It really felt like we had a good opportunity of winning that one. We fought back, everybody played hard. We had little breakdowns here and there on defense, where we fouled them and gave them opportunities to make free throws, instead of earn them. We made it easier for them by fouling them and sending them to the line."

A Dyson 3-pointer with 2:33 left tied the game at 65, and UConn had several chances Replica Immersion to take its first lead since 2-1 over the next two minutes.

But the Huskies couldn't convert, and Syracuse star Wes Johnson hit a pair of free throws with 33.5 seconds left.

After a timeout, Dyson misfired on a long 3-pointer with about 13 seconds left on the clock.

"We weren't afraid to take a 3," said acting head coach George

Blaney, "but we would have liked to have taken it a little closer. And (Dyson) agrees."

Indeed ...

"I could have gotten a better one than the one I got," Dyson confessed. "It felt good. I let it fly, and I looked where I was and I was a step or two (behind the 3-point line) ... I thought it was going in."

When asked if Dyson's shot was the one the team wanted, sophomore point guard Kemba Walker said, succinctly: "Not really. We just wanted to get a good shot. That's really it."

Kris Joseph was fouled on the rebound and hit both free throws. Walker drove the length of the floor for a layup, but after a timeout, Joseph caught a long inbounds pass and Ater Majok was called for an intentional foul. Joseph hit both free throws, Jardine added another for good measure, and Syracuse had survived.

"Connecticut isn't going to give up," said Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim. "They've got a tremendously talented group."

But it's a group that is now 1-5 against ranked teams.

"We continue to really show some fight and some heart and fight back," said Blaney. "We get to the point of being able to win a game, and again just can't close it out."

Syracuse opened the second half on a 13-4 run, capped by a Rick Jackson hook shot that gave it a 50-34 lead. UConn responded with an 8-0 run and graduall
