YOUR poor old Grandad had to sweat to buy you handbags and gladrags, according to the song, but for modern Welsh women buying clothes comes all too easy. Getting dressed up to go out on the town is believed to be one of the reasons clothes are the most popular purchase for Welsh shoppers.
An exclusive survey for The Western Mail found 78% of people bought new clothes in the past two months, putting it far ahead of the next most popular purchase - CDs, records, tapes and videos, at 63%. But The Western Mail Ham-merson shopping trends survey revealed that while we like to regularly spoil ourselves with new clothes, far more of our disposable income, around 40%, actually goes on our homes. The average Welsh shopper now spends pounds 65 a month on household goods and a further pounds 31 on DIY goods.
In comparison just pounds 5.82 a month on average is spent on jewellery and just over pounds 45 a month on new clothes.
The findings come as no surprise to Caroline May, ladies' wear assistant manager at Howells in Cardiff, who says the words of the song, sung first by Rod Stewart and then by Stereophonics, couldn't be further from the truth nowadays.

``If you have got a younger person they want something new to wear on a Friday night. They have got more credit and they spend more regularly.''
She said customers buying home wares were more likely to make a number of purchases together after decorating a room, whereas young shoppers would make regular purchases of clothes.
David Atkins, Hammerson's director of Retail Parks, which includes Swansea's Parc Fforestfach, said it was clear that for many people shopping was now part of their leisure activities.
``Clothing remains at the top of the list of items purchased and this year there seems to have been an earlier surge in spending.
That may be because in March and April the weather was unseasonably good,'' he said.

Mr Atkins was not surprised that despite the popularity of clothing, so much disposable income went on people's homes.
``We have seen very strong growth in house prices and as a result people's equity in their house has grown.
``People feel their home is now a good investment and they are more willing to spend money on their homes because they feel it is money well spent.''
For the first time the survey looked at internet shopping, but while the hype around internet shopping may make you think everyone is buying goods on-line the truth is d i ff e r e

Of those questioned 91% said they had never bought food on the internet. Only 2% had bought food at least once a week.
Two-thirds of Welsh consumers had never bought anything off the internet.
The most popular items that Welsh consumers bought on the internet were CDs and videos and books, bought by 13% of respondents.
Some 6% bought electrical goods online, while just 2% bought holidays on the web.
