THESE FOUR WOMEN ALL ADMIT THEY ARE ADDICTS - BUT IT'S NOT DRINK OR DRUGS THAT'S GOT THEM HOOKED. HERE, THEY OPEN UP ABOUT THEIR CRAVINGS WHILE PSYCHOLOGIST CLIFF ARNALL ANALYSES EACH CASE. BY HELEN CARROLL

It's much better than any drug

SHOPAHOLIC

LUCY Falconer, 24, a model from Bournemouth, Dorset, is addicted to shopping. She says:

EVER since I was a little girl shopping has been my favourite pastime.

I'd spend hours walking round stores with mum, begging her to buy me whatever caught my eye. And as soon as I started earning after finishing my law degree last year I began spending all my spare cash on clothes.

I easily fritter pounds 250 a week on clothes, handbags and shoes. There is no better feeling in the world than handing over money and walking away weighted down with bags.

It gives me such a thrill and I get a real adrenalin rush, my heart races, my mouth goes dry, and I feel as high as a kite. I can't imagine any drug being more exciting.

I have to shop every day. If I can't make it into town I shop online. Keying in my credit card details and knowing that a parcel will be dropping on my mat any day is nearly as thrilling as visiting the shops.

Unlike some people I never feel sick or angry with myself after a spree even though I only wear many of the once.

Stainless Steel Set

My mum is always telling me to stop spending. She says: "You have over pounds 20,000 worth of gear in your wardrobes, why do you need more?"

I think she worries if ever I don't have so much disposable income I'll end up in serious debt. She might be right but, for now, I'm going to continue feeding my shopping habit.

EXPERT'S VERDICT

Lucy's addiction seems less serious than the others but she has to shop every day. There is no doubt she is excessively preoccupied with buying things she doesn't need.

HOOKED ON WEB

NETAHOLIC

LINDIE Gunston, 29, a nursery nurse from Lincoln, is married to Peter, 34, a nurse. She is hooked on the internet. Lindie says:

I'VE been trying for a baby for two years and am hopelessly addicted to an internet site and chat room called Trying For A Baby.

I spend up to six hours a day online, doing my best to help other women with their problems as well as searching for advice that might help me conceive.

The closer the time comes to my period being due, the more hours I spend in the chat room.

Reading about other women as desperate for a baby as me is what first got me hooked on the website. My husband was sick of me chewing his ear about babies, while I found it hard to think about anything else. So the site seemed the perfect solution.

There are no obvious reasons Peter and I haven't conceived, though the GP has referred us for further tests.

Peter tries to limit my time on the computer because he doesn't think it's healthy. But I'm always itching to get home after work so I can get online.

I fling some dinner in the oven and then log on, desperately looking for new tips and news of fellow surfers who have fallen pregnant.

I can't stand it when my husband needs to use the computer.
